Journal Key:

Green = Steve | George = navy | Janet = Purple | Evelyn = Black

2/27-3/2/14 (Thursday-Sunday)

So yeah, journal-writing has really slipped lately. To be fair, things were pretty crazy this weekend. First of all, on Thursday we finally had some guys come to the house and repaint our living room, and also repair our kitchen and repaint that. The kids were cruelly forced to not watch TV for one evening while everything was unplugged in the living room. For Friday night we met at Chili's and then wandered over to Barnes and Noble. We went out to breakfast on Saturday morning because our kitchen was being invaded again.

We went from breakfast to Target and from there to the pet store. The kids wanted to see kitties in the pet store but they had to settle for slightly smaller animals. Owen sat down on our way out of the store to thoroughly examine a magazine about Yorkshire terriers. Then we hit the library as well. In the early afternoon, Cara and Evelyn went off to PJ's birthday party at the roller rink! Owen and I hung out at home (by this point, the painting guys were done for the weekend).

In the evening, we all drove down to Grandmama and Grandpapa's house and had dinner. Evelyn tried to demonstrate Owen's competence with identifying letters--of course, he failed to correctly identify anything, because they never do their tricks when someone else is looking. After a lovely dinner we parents took off and the children had a sleepover. Here are some notes from their adventure:

Owen did a wonderful drawing with his name in the center, spelled OMEMN. He began with that and surrounded it with an elegant design, that was eventually identified as a rocket ship, with 4 wings, but not a real one.

Cara did a beautiful poster about the meaning of family. Flanked by hearts that say "Love is great!" a central scroll reads: "A happy family is a kind, loving family, that helps each other. A loving family is a happy, caring, creative family. A strong family is an adventurous family. My family is all of these things. The most important thing is everyone loves eachother." The is followed by a heart inscribed, By: Carolyn Genzano. Below that are the words "Love, love, love, love, love, love, love!" And, below that, "Family is great! Love is great!"

Last night, me, to Owen: "There are so many toys on this bed, there's no room for you!"
Cara: "Grandmama, you're just using hyperbole."
Well, yes. Yes I was.

This morning Owen greeted Grandpapa with the great news, "Grandpapa, I made poopie on the potty at your house!" (Which he had indeed just done. He conned me into reading 3 stories.)

No injuries occurred during this week's pillow fight :-)

Sunday morning Evelyn was trying to get some school work done, but she was interrupted since we had to deal with a very flat tire on her car and sneak in a trip to the grocery store. Then the kids came home and we scraped together some lunch, and Aunt Claire came to visit! Aunt Claire was a great helper for us and read several library books to Owen, then also had to watch while he brutalized a set of army men. We hope she had a good time.

There was some snow in the evening and a delayed opening for Cara, which is why I have the time (and desire) to finally catch up on the journal. Whew.

3/3/14 (Monday)

Somehow, bedtime became difficult this evening. I'm trying to get Owen to stop having an extra drink before bed, and that led to some screaming. The wretched kid actually started up again around ten, when Steve and I were trying to head for bed. He wanted to get up and play a game. His kitty, Fluffy, wanted to get up and play a game. I told him that Fluffy could go and play a game alone. "No, you have to help him: his arms don't move!"

Eventually, Owen played his trump card: he had to go to the potty. After that, he had no more tricks to try.

3/4/14 (Tuesday)

Again, from our trip home:

Owen: Is it night time?

Me: Well, it's sort of in between. The sun is going down soon, but it's still light.

Owen: No, it's night time. You're wrong!

Me: Are you sure? Look at the sky.

Owen: . . .

Me: What does the sky look like?

Owen: The sky looks like it needs to make pee-pee! (laughs uproariously)

Me: Um . . . how can you tell?

Owen: Because it has pants! (laughs uproariously)

After we had gotten Cara, things got somewhat worse.

Owen: The sky needs to make poopie!

Cara: That's just gross.

Owen: The sky needs to make poopie! The moon needs to make pee-pee! (laughs uproariously)

Cara: I don't think that's funny.

She and I are just not the right audience for this act.

After that, the children spent much of the trip home fighting over who could see the moon.

3/5/14 (Wednesday)

Today was Cara's teacher's birthday.

Cara: I'm pretty sure Miss Brotspies turned 28 . . . or 29.

Owen: Miss Vina is turning 79. And Miss Mona is turning six!

Cara: I don't think that's true: she wouldn't even have a job!

I remembered, today, to take Fluffy out of Owen's nap bag. He was very happy to have Fluffy at home. Fluffy was hungry, after playdate, and needed some play food. I got out some food. It was not enough. Fluffy had to eat until he got fat, which took quite a lot.
